Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948) - Letter - an important Gandhi letter, written in Guajarati on two sheets; Dear Sister, You are going to have the Upnayan Sanskar (a ritual) for Jitendra. For that blend my blessings with the blessings of both of you. And tell Jitendra that, now it is his real new birth (incarnation). The birth we get from our parents is for bodily only, but with the Upnayan Sanskar, we are having born of our soul. This knowledge will help him for his good use. My health is fine. I am doing forcibly good deeds (virtue) in pursuit of peace. Blessings from Mohan Bapu. Hope you are living happily. Or is there anything sad? [Illegible/guessed] Written in pencil on two sheets of tissue paper. Faint, but legible. Folds and staining, but complete. Fragile. Each approx; 16cm x 13cm. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (2 October 1869 – 30 January 1948) was an Indian lawyer, anti-colonial nationalist and political ethicist who employed nonviolent resistance to lead the successful campaign for India's independence from British Rule, and in turn inspire movements for civil rights and freedom across the world. Gandhi's birthday, 2 October, is commemorated in India as Gandhi Jayanti, a national holiday, and worldwide as the International Day of Nonviolence. Gandhi is commonly, though not formally, considered the Father of the Nation in India, and was commonly called Bapu (Father). Provenance - from the collection of Dr Balvantrai N. Kanuga, Gandhi's personal long-term physician and friend.
