Mahatma Gandi (1869-1948) - Letter - a postcard written by Gandhi, just over one month after his release from prison in 1944. The letter is addressed to Nandubahen, the wife of Gandhi's personal Doctor - Dr Kanuga. Reads: Puna 18-06-44 Dear Nandubahen, I became very much pleased seeing your handwriting. Seems your face appeared in front of me. I will wait for your coming on 29th date. Actually everyone is restricted from coming here, but only those are allowed whom I call. And you are one of them. Now the doctor might have become like [Illegible]. You are so…… lucky! You reached till Badrinarayan. For me, these all remained dreams only, and maybe will remain also. Blessings from Bapu to all the sisters. Address Mrs. Nandubahen At Dr. Kanuga’s home Ellis Bridge, Ahmedabad. Written in blue fountain pen ink to both sides, the address in Gandhi's hand, with another hand providing some corrections. 6x4", approx. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (2 October 1869 – 30 January 1948) was an Indian lawyer, anti-colonial nationalist and political ethicist who employed nonviolent resistance to lead the successful campaign for India's independence from British Rule, and in turn inspire movements for civil rights and freedom across the world. Gandhi's birthday, 2 October, is commemorated in India as Gandhi Jayanti, a national holiday, and worldwide as the International Day of Nonviolence. Gandhi is commonly, though not formally, considered the Father of the Nation in India, and was commonly called Bapu (Father). Provenance - from the collection of Dr Balvantrai N. Kanuga, Gandhi's personal long-term physician and friend.
