He was the son of Edward Feetham Coates, 1st Bt. and Edith Woolley. He married Lady Celia Hermione Crewe-Milnes, daughter of Sir Robert Offley Ashburton Crewe-Milnes, 1st and last Marquess of Crewe and Sibyl Marcia Graham, on 8 October 1906.He died on 4 September 1971 at age 92. He was educated Charterhouse and Exeter College Oxford. He was Captain (RO) 15th/19th Hussars WW I (dispatches). He was Justice of the Peace (J.P.). He was Officer, Order of the British Empire (O.B.E.) in 1919. He was Knight, Order of the Garter (K.G.)
