A remarkable lot of 400+ photographs and other related items from the footlocker of World War I Major General Johnson Hagood, including signed portraits of well-known military and political figures, as well as photographs and snapshots taken primarily while Hagood was serving abroad. Major General Johnson Hagood (1873-1948) was born in Orangeburg, South Carolina. He graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1891, and went on to graduate from the U.S. Military Academy in 1896. After performing Garrison Service in Rhode Island, Connecticut, and South Carolina between 1896-1901, he taught philosophy at the U.S. Military Academy from 1901-1904. Hagood was assigned Assistant to chief of artillery between 1905-1907, and he became a member of the General Staff Corps in 1908. He served as Aide-de-camp to Maj. Gen. J.F. Bell, 1908-1910, then as assistant fo Maj. Gen. Leonard Wood until 1912. Hagood commanded Fort Flagler, Washington, from 1912-1913, then saw overseas service in the Philippines, 1913-1915. In July 1917, Hagood was appointed Commander of the 7th Regiment, 1st Expeditionary Brigade, Coast Artillery Corps, and arrived in France in Sept. 1917, fighting near Soissons. By 1918, Hagood was assigned to the General Staff, A.E.F., and he served as President of the board that reorganized the A.E.F. staff and created the Services of Supply (S.O.S.). Hagood acted as chief of staff of S.O.S. until Armistice, and received a Distinguished Service Medal Citation in 1919 as a result of his contributions to S.O.S. Between June and July of 1918, Hagood was in battle sectors along American, British, and French fronts, and he took part in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive in Oct. 1918. He was then appointed commander of the 20th C.A. Brigade, but was then transferred to the 66th F.A. Brigade. After crossing the Rhein River in late Dec. 1918, Hagood established headquarters at Hohr, Germany. He went on to command army artillery of the 3rd Army as well as corps artillery of the 3rd Corps. After serving in the Army of Occupation until May 1919, Hagood returned to the U.S. Following World War I, Hagood commanded several posts between 1919-1936, including Fort Stotsenburg, Philippine Islands, and the 2nd Coast Artillery at Fort Totten, NY, among many others. Following a long, successful military career, Hagood retired in 1936. In addition to the Distinguished Service Medal, he also received the Commander Legion of Honor (French), Commander Order of Crown of Italy, and the Grand Officer Order of the Sacred Treasure (Japanese).
