CDV full-length studio portrait of Major Martin Delany in military uniform, no imprint, circa 1864. Photographer unidentified. Delany wears his double-breasted uniform with tasseled sash and brimmed hat. He grips his unsheathed sword in one hand while steadying his sheath with the other. Images of Delany are remarkably scarce with only one other copy of this image known. Martin Robison Delany (1812-1885) was one of the first African American men admitted to Harvard Medical School and led a distinguished medical career in addition to his abolitionist activities, journalistic pursuits, and interest in foreign colonization for African Americans. During the Civil War, he served as a surgeon in the famed 54th Massachusetts Volunteers and also aided in recruitment efforts. In February 1865, he became the first African American man to receive a regular army commission when promoted to major in the 104th US Colored Troops.
