Malayan Airmails The Wartime Period BOAC Singapore to Durban "Horseshoe" Route With Italy's entry into the war in June 1940, the Mediterranean route to the UK was cut and the emergency "Horseshoe" route was in operation by 19 June between Durban and Sydney, with BOAC serving the Durban - Singapore section, and Qantas the Singapore - Sydney section. From Durban mail was carried by sea to the UK 1940 (19 June) envelopes (2) to Sydney, one from Singapore franked at 55c., the other from Palestine franked at 60m., both marked "First Flight. Altered Service due to War Conditions. Durban via Egypt to Australia per flying boat 'Corio' G-AEUH" , showing Censor cachets and signed by the pilot, Capt. R.
