King Manuel wrote the descriptions of the first 120 books, chronologically arranged 1489-1569, himself; they include the most detailed bibliographical and historical research, occupying 1,450 pages of the first two volumes. The third volume, compiled by the ex-king's librarian, Miss Margery Withers, describes the books printed 1570-1600 (Nos. 121-414) in a more summary fashion. This is the most important collection of early Portuguese books ever formed. (3)
