Manuscript Appeal to Congress by Children of John Ward “White Wolf” for Donation of Land Author: Place: Publisher: Date: c. 1790s Description: 4pp. 9¾x8", 3 page manuscript letter with last page labeled "Address to Congress by J. Ward's family." Typed transcript. The children of John Ward outline their history and petition for land because of their father’s admonition to “attach ourselves to Our White friends.” John Ward the older brother of frontiersman Captain James Ward was kidnapped by Shawnee Indians at the age of 3. He was raised by an Indian family, was given the Indian name of "White Wolf", and fought as an Indian in their campaigns. John married Sutawnt Tame Doe about 1773. On October 10, 1774, John fought with the Shawnee Indians under Puck-e-shin-wa at the Battle of Point Pleasant, VA (now WV). Puck-e-shin-wa was the father of the soon-to-be famous Tecumseh. Puck-e-shin-wa was killed as well as John's father, James, who fought against the Shawnee. He was killed at Reeve's Crossing, Paint Creek, near Bainbridge in Ross County, OH in 1793 during a small skirmish with a white party. Lot Amendments Condition: Old folds with tears along the folds; good to very good. Item number: 315131
