Title: Manuscript record of legal proceedings regarding dispute over ownership of slaves Author: ** Place: Washington, Texas Publisher: Date: 1848 Description: 46 leaves, handwritten on rectos only. 12¾x8, affixed together with ribbon ties. Lawsuit brought by Hugh McIntyre against William Chappel, claiming he was the rightful owner of "the following negro slaves. Eliza a woman aged about twenty four & her child about one year worth one thousand dollars. Joseph a man about twenty two years & worth one thousand dollars, one boy William Jefferson about twelve years of age worth six hundred dollars, girl Elvira five years old & worth five hundred dollars..." The case began in 1844, when Texas was a republic, and within the document is much on the sale and ownership of slaves. Lot Amendments Condition: Some minor aging, very good or better.
