Map of Scotland Constructed from Original Materials Obtained under The Authority of The Parliamentary Commissioners For making Roads and building Bridges In the Highlands of Scotland... Author: Arrowsmith, Aaron Place: London Publisher: A. Arrowsmith Date: 1807 [but 1810] Description: Engraved map. Dissected and mounted on linen, in four sections. Overall 177x139 cm (69¾x54¾"). Accompanied by: A Part of the N.E. Coast of the Shetland Islands Surveyed in Jany. 1795 by Lieut. Columbine. Engraved map. Dissected and mounted on linen. 95x59.5 cm (37½x23½"). 1807 [but 1810?]. Memoir relative to the construction of the Map of Scotland... 45, [1] pp. With 2 engraved maps, 1 of them folding. (4to) 31.5x25.5 cm (12½x10"), original printed wrappers. Large, finely engraved and important map of Scotland on four large sheets, accompanied by Arrowsmith's map of the Shetland and Orkney Islands, and the memoir in which Arrowsmith describes how he compiled his map of Scotland. The folding map in the Memoir is supposedly an engraving of a 14th century map of Britain, later established (in the mid-1800's) to be a mid-1700s fake. The large map of Scotland is the second issue, indicated by the designation that Arrowsmith is Hydrographer to the Prince of Wales. Early Maps of Scotland, p 213, gives the date of reissue as 1810. The linen-backed maps and the Memoir are housed in a stiff paper folder custom-made by Warren Heckrotte. Lot Amendments Condition: Some foxing to the large maps; all in very good or better condition. Item number: 309456
