FIRST EDITION of this compilation emanating from La Pléiade . The Seymour sisters, daughters of Edward Seymour 1st Duke of Somerset, composed these Latin distichs to honour the memory of Marguerite de Valois, Queen of Navarre, and their Latin verses were first published in 1550. Their verses were then taken up by Nicolas Denizot, comte d'Alsinois, who had been their tutor in London, and several of the poets of La Pléiade , who published them with translations into Greek by Dorat, Italian by Pierre de Mesmes, and French by du Bellay, Antoine Baïf and others.
