Title with woodcut royal device, woodcut astronomical symbols, head- and tailpieces, the monthly tables interleaved with blue-paper leaves with printed borders, the same leaves bound in as additional front and rear endpapers. (Light browning and offsetting, small hole affecting text on O6.) Contemporary crushed maroon morocco, covers with gilt triple fillet border and fleur-de-lis corner-pieces enclosing the ARMS OF MARIE-ANTOINETTE as Queen of France [Olivier 2508 ( fer 9), citing the present volume], gilt spine compartments with fleur-de-lis tools, gilt board edges and turn-ins, silk doublures, gilt edges (corners a little rubbed, board edges lightly bumped, partial cracking on joints, skilful restoration at head and tail of spine), modern box. Provenance : Marie-Antoinette (binding); indistinct early inscription on title; COMTE DE BéARN (bookplate, cf. Olivier 2508 'vente de Béarn, 1 r e partie, 1920, n o 159'); LUCIUS WILMERDING (bookplate); Mary Anna Marten (bookplate). Marie-Antoinette formed two libraries, the collection at the Tuileries (numbering some 1,371 works in 4,712 volumes), and a second at the Petit Trianon. Volumes from the library at the Petit Trianon can be distinguished by a gilt-stamped cipher with the initials 'C[hâteau] T[rianon]' surmounted by a crown (Olivier 2508, fer 15) at the tail of the spine, sometimes duplicated on the upper board. The absence of this fer from the present volume indicates that it is from the library at the Tuileries. Most of the books in this library were 'said by Brunet to have been bound by a binder named Blaizot. They are usually covered with red morocco' (Fletcher p. 74). After the Revolution, the bulk of the books in the Tuileries library were deposited at the Bibliothèque Nationale.
