MARIE DE MEDICIS (1573-1642), queen-consort of Henri IV of France . Autograph letter signed ("Marie") to the Marquis de Brézé, Paris, 25 September 1627. 1 page, 11 7/8 x 8 in., integral address panel, in French, short tears to folds and minor spotting , SIGNET SEAL on red wax (diameter 14 mm. ( 5/8 in.), showing the Queen' s arms surmounted by a crown), two impressions, one with slight damage, remnants of silk thread . Marie de Medicis writes to the captain of her bodyguard, thanking him for his service and declaring her pleasure that he is to assume the same role in the household of her son the King (Louis XIII). The recipient, Urbain de Maillé, Marquis de Brézé, was married to the older sister of Louis's chief minister, Cardinal Richelieu. After Henri IV's assassination in 1610, Marie de Medici assumed power as regent, her son being then 9 years old. She continued in this role even after he came of age until Louis took control of the government in 1617 and exiled his mother to Blois. In view of Marie's outcast status, the change in role of the captain of her bodyguard may have had delicate political connotations.
