MARION, FRANCIS, 1732-1795, "The Swamp Fox," Partisan leader, Revolutionary War . Autograph letter signed ("Fran. Marion Lt. Col. 2d. Regt.") TO MAJOR GENERAL BENJAMIN LINCOLN, "Camp at Sheldon" [South Carolina], 14 November 1779. 1/2 page, folio, 303 x 250mm. (12 3/8 x 9 15/16 in.), address panel on verso WITH MARION'S VERY RARE AUTOGRAPH FREE FRANK: "On public service," three small holes in blank portion, not affecting text. Boldly signed, with flourish. "THE SWAMP FOX" OF THE REVOLUTION SETTLES A MATTER OF COMMAND A letter dated a month after Marion had led his troops in a gallant, but unsuccessful assault on British lines at Savannah (9 October). Major General Benjamin Lincoln had been appointed to command the American military forces in the Southern theater: "Yours of the 11th...came to hand Last night, Inclosed is the Returns of the Q.M.Genl. of the stores in his care; I must observe that I am not Commanding Officer of this Ground; the Command was given by Col. Beekman to Col. Garden of the Militia, with whom I am very happy, but shall with Pleasure Obey all your Orders respecting the Continental Troops which I command under him....." Marion was a veteran of the frontier fights with the Cherokees and owned a small plantation at the outbreak of the war. He joined the militia, helped drive the British from the state, and fought in the siege of Charleston in May 1780. When American forces were dispersed by the strong British counterattacks, he was named Brigadier General of state troops and launched a carrer as guerilla, successfully harassing and attacking the British garrisons and marching columns from bases deep in the southern swamps. But "while most famous as a guerilla, he had the military standards of a regular...he could subordinate himself to higher military authority and fit his partisan operations into the overall strategy..." Boatner, p. 679). Marion's letters are rare.
