Manuscript compendium of navigational theory and practice, plus an extensive "Journal of a voyage from England to Madeira," a "Form of a journal used in the Royal Navy," as practiced on board H.M.S. dreadnought , and tables and examples of various navigational calculations, containing INCLUDING TWO FULL-PAGE WATERCOLOR DRAWINGS OF WARSHIPS and two smaller watercolor drawings, one of a compass. England, 1804 - 1819. 2 o (310 x 197mm.), 134pp. Inscribed in a fine calligraphic hand throughout, most pages carefully ruled in red, bold calligraphic headings on most pages. (Very minor edge wear, and traces of handling.) Marbled paper wrappers (rubbed). A very extensive course, documenting the most modern navigational practices in the Royal Navy during the period just after the battle of Trafalgar. One very skilled drawing shows a three-masted vessel under full sail flying the British Ensign, the other depicts a similar vessel, sails reefed, anchored in an unidentified bay. The notebook features "Practical Geometry," "Plane Trigonometry," "Basic Navigation," "Middle latitude Sailing," "Traverse Sailing," and progresses to such topics as "Parallel sailing of compound courses, by Mercator," "Finding the longitude by observation," "Of the variation of the compass," "Finding the latitude by double altitude, "and the use of various instruments including the Gunter, Compass and Hadley's Sextant.
