Mark Catesby (1682-1749) & George Edwards (1694-1773) STEINMAN (compilor). Album, with manuscript title ' Receuil d'oiseaux enluminés de Marc Catesby 1769 ', hand-coloured plates from Johann Michael Seligmann's Sammlung verschiedener auslaendischer Voegel , 12pp. calligraphic manuscript introduction and index. Lyons: 1769. 2° (403 x 245mm). 1p.title (as above), verso and following 2 pages 'Avertissement' with Steinman's signature and a mounted engraved vignette at the foot of the third page, 9pp.'Table alphabétique de la présente Collection' (all the preceeding with the lettering within borders ruled in red and green), engraved frontispiece, in hand-coloured and uncoloured states, with integral sub-title 'Catesby ünd Edwards Sammlüng selfener Vögel, Tom. I', uncoloured engraved portrait, 262 FINE HAND-COLOURED ENGRAVED PLATES by or published by J.M. Seligmann, after Catesby (108) or Edwards (154), plates either numbered or inscribed in ink by Steinman. Extra-illustrated at a later date (between 1782-1795) by ?J.L. Beraud with 10 tipped-in smaller format hand-coloured engraved plates by Francois Nicolas Martinet. All leaves re-numbered, all Seligmann plates with added inscriptions beneath and 3pp. index at end, all in ink by ?Beraud. Contemporary French marbled sheep, spine gilt in seven compartments, red morocco letteringt-piece in the second, the others with elaborate repeat decoration in gilt (spine chipped at head and foot, joints and extremities scuffed). Provenance : Steinman, of Lyons (compilor); J.L. Beraud (engraved armorial bookplate, with letterpress label above 'hist. natur' and below 'Botanique', manuscript additions, including a note that the album had cost him 600 livre [the use of 'livre' dates the purchase to before 1795]). A unique compilation, apparently from 'Theil. I-V' of Seligmann's Sammlung verscheidener auslandischer Voegel , which was published in 9 parts between 1749 and 1776 (part V was published in 1759). The plates are re-engraved by Seligmann and his associates from the originals by Catesby, published in his Natural History of Carolina, Florida, and the Bahama Islands (London: 1731-1743) or George Edwards ( A Natural History of Uncommon Birds and its sequel Gleanings from Natural History , published between 1743 and 1751). The compilor apparently did not know of Edwards contribution (he makes no mention of him), but according to the compilor he included only birds that he had not encountered before ('Je n'ai rassemblé dans ce receuil que les oiseaux dont cet auteur adonné une histoire que je ne connoissois pas..'). He finishes his introduction 'J'invita celui à qui ce volume appartiendra après moi de le conserve avec soin', the ?subsequent owner has written 'il a été paye 600 livre'. Cf. Anker 462; cf. Nissen IVB 857.
