Mark Gertler (British, 1891-1939) Head of a Girl (Miss Anne David) signed and dated 'M.Gertler.38' (upper right) oil on canvas 46 x 33 cm. (18 x 13 in.) Fußnoten Provenance The Artist, from whom acquired by Colonel Charles H. David, thence by descent to Miss Anne David (the sitter), thence by descent to the present owner Private Collection, U.K. The present work poses an intriguing mystery. A label which accompanies the picture from an untraced exhibition identifies the sitter as The Spanish Girl, and indeed a stamp to the back of the canvas and stretcher identifies their origin as the atelier Casa Texidor at number 16 Ronda S.Pere, Barcelona. Gertler took several holidays to Spain in the 1930s, with Spanish subjects featuring regularly in his oils of the decade and as such one would assume that this stylish figure, rendered with a monumental and sculptural quality reminiscent of Picasso's neoclassicism, would also hail from Spain. However, the sitter is known to be Miss Anne David, a student of Gertler's at The Westminster School of Art who was also painted by Raymond Sheppard, and who had no known ties to the country.
