Martinique & St. Kitts.- Fair (Thomas, captain of the Irmelinda merchant vessel, d. 1801) & Robert Fair, captain after the death of his brother Thomas who died at Demarara, d. 1844) Log book of the Irmelinda, manuscript log book, in several hands, 209pp. excluding blanks, browned, some slight foxing and staining, printed advertisement: "J.B. Courthope, Bookseller, and Paper-Hanger..." laid down on front pastedown, original half calf, rubbed, red morocco label "Irmelinda's Log-Book 1801" on upper cover, small piece of calf lacking, 1 brass clasp only of 2, spine worn, joints splitting, 4to, Sunday 15th March - 10th December 1801 & 12th April - 26th August 1802. *** A ship's log of voyages; the first from London to Madeira, Demerara and returning via Martinique and St Kitts, and secondly, two voyages from London to Oporto. "Ship Irmelina on her passage from Martinique to St. Kitts... Winds ENE At 4 the Island Nevis bore NNW distant 5 leagues... At 4 Spoke the Commodore, & at 5 came to an Anchor in St Kitts Roads in 18 F[atho]ms... Andrew Willson Dead - John Johnston sick." Thomas Fair was born at Skibbereen, County Cork, in Ireland, and joined the merchant navy. He sailed around the world under the command of Captain Nathaniel Portlock, (b. in or before 1747, d. 1817, naval officer and fur trader), during the years 1785-88. Fair's Island was named after him as he was the first to sight it off the north-west coast of America. He died of yellow fever on this journey as captain of the Irmelinda, and was buried at Demarara in 1801, succeeded as captain by his brother Robert.
