Sharpe, Horatio (1718-1790). 22nd Proprietary Governor of Maryland. Partially printed DS, 1p, 12 x 16 in., Prince George's County, Maryland. November 21, 1760. A very early Maryland land grant issued during the French and Indian War-period. Horatio Sharpe was the 22nd proprietary governor of Maryland from 1753 to 1768 under the restored proprietary government of Maryland. He arrived in Maryland in August of 1753 and was appointed the Royal Commander in Chief of all British Forces and the commander of colonial forces for the protection of Virginia and adjoining Colonies by the King of England in 1754. Sharpe was superseded by the arrival of Major General Edward Braddock in 1755. He was a friend of both George Mason and George Washington. Sharpe also built the plantation house Whitehall located on the outskirts of Annapolis. Whitehall is a Georgian Mansion built pre-Revolutionary War and located on the Chesapeake. This served as Sharpe's residence from 1769 until his return to England in 1773. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1960.
