MASQUE NTSAYE TEKE République Démocratique du Congo Rare masque discoïdal en bois polychrome, à exceptionnelle patine d'usage ancienne, représentant un visage humain stylisé à décor en champlevé, le front en demi-cercle orné d'une frise en diadème de motifs géométriques et d'une scarification en losange au milieu, l'arc dédoublé des sourcils délimite deux demi-cercles comme de larges paupières inscrites chacune au centre d'un motif en navette, une petite marche médiane délimite la face en deux, surplombant le large demi-cercle du bas du visage oü figurent très rapprochés les yeux fendus de part et d'autre du nez bref et droit, les joues ou cavités sub-orbitales peintes en blanc, séparées du menton par un double arc reprenant le mouvement des sourcils avec lequel il trace un large huit, dans l'axe du nez, une petite bouche ronde entourée de deux losanges est sculptée, le pourtour est gravé d'une nervure et percé de nombreux trous de fixation de parure, au dos, le bourrelet de portage très épais forme un arceau percé de quatre trous, la surface du masque est peinte au rouge de padouk et au kaolin, les reliefs teintés de noir. NTSAYE TEKE MASK 19th century, Congo Rare disk-shaped mask representing a stylised human face, with champ levé decoration, the semi-circular forehead is decorated with a fringed diadem of geometric motifs and with scarification in the form of a lozenge in the centre, the double arc of the eye brows outlining two semi-circles suggesting eye lids, each with a shuttle motif in the centre, a small step devides the face in two, above the broad semi-circle of the lower face, worked with two narrow eyes set close on either side of the short, straight nose, the cheeks and sub orbital cavities are painted in white, separated from the chin by a double arc echoing the arcs of the eye brows, and forming a large figure '8' with them, below the nose, a small, round mouth within two lozenges is carved, the circumference incised with tracery and pierced with several holes for fixing, on the reverse, the thick carrying mount forms a bow pierced in four places, the surface of the mask is painted in red padouk and kaolin, the reliefs are stained black.
