Title: Masters Tournament Low Amateur Trophy Cup Awarded to E. Harvie Ward Jr. Author: Ward, E. Harvie, Jr. Place: Augusta, GA Publisher: Augusta National Golf Club Date: 1953 or 1957 Description: Sterling silver trophy cup with Masters Tournament official logo and Harvie Ward Jr. on metal piece on one side and etched Augusta National Golf Club clubhouse on piece on other side. Measures 4" tall; top diameter 5½", base diameter 3¾". Housed in a 14"x10¾"x7" custom built green morocco clamshell box with gilt lettered morocco spine labels providing title of this presentation and Ward’s four rounds of scores; cup fits inside special hollowed section and includes below a presentation slip printed: “For the Autograph Collection of Dr. John Davis Jr.” and signed “E. Harvie Ward to Dr. Davis – Masters ’85, U.S. Amateur 1955-1956” protected behind plexi-glass; also a photograph of Ward Jr. with Arnold Palmer mounted on the front board and a photograph of Ward Jr. with a fellow Augusta National Golf Club member in their respective Green Jackets on the inside box cover. Truly a rare offering, the sterling trophy presented to Harvie Ward Jr. (1925 –2004) for finishing as low amateur in either the 1953 or 1957 Masters Tournament. Ward was the low amateur in three Masters Tournaments, 1953, 1955 and 1957. The trophy he received for the 1955 tournament was dated, but the other two were undated, and it is not known which of those achievements the present trophy celebrated. It the 1957 tournament, Ward's total score of 288 placed him fourth overall in the tournament won by Doug Ford. Harvie Ward was a fine player who won two U.S. Amateur titles and is one of a handful of amateurs to contend for a Masters title. Ward played in 10 Masters Tournaments from 1948-58, missing only the '49 tournament. He finished in the top 24 four times. Augusta sterling is some of the most sought after in tournament golf and once attained rarely leaves a family; this may be the only Masters trophy ever offered on the open market.
