Black calf by Monique Mathieu, the upper cover with five irregularly-shaped areas 'bricked-up' by rows of small rectangular onlays of light-brown/black speckled leather, the largest area with the 'bricks' apparently emerging from the covers, the revealed edges of the 'bricks' with onlays of green or purple calf, the lower cover with a similarly executed design but with all the bricks remaining in place, the flat spine tooled with the author's name interpersed by the vertical title inlaid in speckled leather, green and purple calf, the doublures with overall abstract designs in green and purple calf, light brown suede endleaves, original titled wrappers bound-in, black calf-backed cloth boxed, lined in suede with shaped sunken section, spine with the title onlaid in raised blacki calf letters edged in purple, green or brown, monogram on front doublure: M.M., dated 1982, on rear doublure. ONE OF THE GREATEST 20TH-CENTURY ILLUSTRATED BOOKS IN AN EDITION LIMITED TO 270 COPIES on vélin d'arches , this number 94 of 250, signed in pencil by Matisse on the limitation leaf. Matisse began experimenting with cut paper collages in the early-40s, the original of the present work was composed by him during a 12-month confinement to his bed in 1944. It is the only work of which he was both author and illustrator. Edmond Vairel, the printer of the plates, has captured the vibrant colours of Matisse's original, largely by employing the same gouaches de linel as the artist, the text was engraved after Matisse's original manuscript. The designs appear to burst out of the confines of the book: an illusion brilliantly reinforced in the design of the binding by Monique Mathieu, the bulging 'wall' design showing Matisse's world of colour seeping through around the edges of the 'bricks'.
