This is the last fully bound sketchbook of studies by Maurice Prendergast not included in a museum collection. This extraordinary work includes brilliantly colored watercolors and deft studies of daily life in the early twentieth century. Harbor views, village rooftops, children with boats, and park scenes are here depicted by the artist with the verve and spontaneity that make his work so enchanting. On the whole, the sketches appear to have been executed in the general vicinity of Cape Ann, Gloucester, and Marblehead. One work is inscribed "Public Garden," presumably referring to the Boston Public Garden. Others bear notations as to color and locale. Of the eighty-nine Maurice Prendergast sketchbooks, seventy-five are held by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; five are in the Williams College Museum of Art, Williamstown, MA. The John Sloan Study Collection at the Delaware Art Museum, Wilmington, and the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, CT each have one example. The Cleveland Museum, OH owns four sketchbooks and The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York has two. C The Spanierman Gallery, LLC Collection of American Art
Colors are brilliant and unfaded, pages undarkened from exposure to light. A few pages are torn out, others are loose from the binding. A few small tears.
