MAWE, JOHN. TRAVELS IN THE INTERIOR OF BRAZIL, PARTICULARLY IN THE GOLD AND DIAMOND DISTRICTS OF THAT COUNTRY BY AUTHORITY OF THE PRINCE REGENT OF PORTUGAL, INCLUDING A VOYAGE TO THE RIO DE LA PLATA AND AN HISTORICAL SKETCH OF THE REVOLUTION OF BUENOS AYRES London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown, 1812. 366pp. Diamonds were discovered in Brazil in 1725 and were the largest producer until the opening of the South African diamond mines in the mid 1800's. This text was the first in English to document Brazil's gemmological wealth. However, it is more than a book on diamond mining, because it also takes into consideration the geography, people, animals and plants of the country. The frontispiece plate has become a historically important visual on diamond washing. This edition is beautifully bound and in particularly good condition.
