Max Ernst (1891-1976) Le grand ignorant signed with initials 'ME' (on the centre panel), signed again 'M E' (on the lithograph) oil and collage on painted wood with lithograph, a three panel screen 72½ x 62in. (184 x 157.5cm.) overall This three-panel screen is based on Ernst's painting of 1965, The Great Ignoramus (see E. Quinn, Max Ernst , Paris 1976, p.407, no.526) In 1974, Modarco S.A. in Geneva commissioned Max Ernst to execute ninety-nine screens and forty-nine beds entitled Lit-Cage et son Paravent . Although all the screens were produced only fifteen beds were executed before the artist's death in 1976.
