MAYO (ANTOINE MALLIARAKIS) 1905-1990 Revenir encore 1969 Oil on canvas, signed lower right recto; signed, titled and dated 'Querceto 69' on the reverse. 18.50 x 14.96 in. The artistic production of Antoine Malliarakis called Mayo, Greek-naturalized French, is generally classified as a surrealist, a movement in which he actively participated but never officially joined. In addition to painting, Mayo collaborated extensively with the magazine Le Grand Jeu, illustrated books by Camus, Desnos and Prévert, and participated in numerous theatre and film productions, for example as a costume designer for the masterpiece by Marcel Carné, Les Enfants du paradis, or as set designer for the world famous Hiroshima mon amour by Alain Resnais. The works presented in these pages come from the collection of a Milanese scholar and socialite who befriended the artist during his long stays in Italy.
