MCKENNEY, Thomas L. (1785-1859) & James HALL (1793-1868). History of the Indian Tribes of North America, with biographical sketches and anecdotes of the principal chiefs. Embellished with one hundred and twenty portraits, from the Indian Gallery in the Department of War, Washington, Philadelphia: T.K. & P.G. Collins for J.T. Bowen, 1848-1850. 3 volumes, 8° (269 x 170mm). Hand-coloured lithographic dedication to Washington, 120 hand-coloured lithographic plates. (Some spotting to text.) Contemporary red half morocco, spines gilt in six compartments with rasied bands, lettered in the second and third, the others alternately tooled with a crossed-pipes tool or a bust-length portrait of an Indian tool, gilt edges (Scuffed, lightly soiled.) First octavo edition, the plates reduced from folio images of the first edition of 1836-1844. Cf. Howes S-129; cf. Sabin 43411 (1850 edition). (3)
