Medals for Services at Sea from the Collection of the Late Oliver Stirling Lee Pair: Leading Stoker J. J. Moxley, Royal Navy India General Service 1854-95, 1 clasp, Perak (Stoker, H.M.S. Hart), second initial given as ‘H.’; South Africa 1877-79, 1 clasp, 1879 (Leadg. Stoker, H.M.S. Forester), minor contact marks and edge bruising, otherwise good very fine (2) £400-500 Footnote John Joseph Moxley was born in Plymouth in November 1851 and entered the Royal Navy as a Stoker 2nd Class in February 1871. His subsequent stints of active service comprised time aboard H.M.S. Hart off the Malay Peninsula in 1875-76, which earned him one of 76 “Perak” clasps issued to his ship’s company, and time aboard the Forester during the South Africa operations of 1879, which earned him one of 111 “1879” clasps issued to his ship’s company. Moxley, who would also appear to have qualified for the L.S. & G.C. Medal, was pensioned ashore in March 1891 but rejoined as an Able Seaman (Pensioner) later that year. He was finally discharged at his own request in September 1895.
