Orontes); Khedive’s Star 1884-6, generally good very fine or better (3) £300-350 Footnote Edwin Hammerton was born at Beckenham, Kent in June 1846 and entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in April 1862. He subsequently witnessed active service aboard H.M.S. Orontes off South Africa during the course of the Zulu War in 1879, and again in the same ship, during his second commission aboard her, in the Egypt operations of 1884. Hammerton was invalided home to the R.N. Hospital Haslar in October of the latter year, the final entry on his service record in the same month noting ‘Whitehall for pension’.
