Goodered, 12th Lancers, late 3rd and 4th Dragoon Guards, and afterwards a Bimbashi and Director of Music to the Egyptian Army India General Service 1895-1902, 1 clasp, Punjab Frontier 1897-98 (4010 Tptr., 4th Dragoon Gds.), single initial ‘J.’; Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, 2 clasps, Cape Colony, South Africa 1901 (4077 Serjt. Tptr., 3rd Dgn. Gds.), single initial ‘J.’; Army L.S. & G.C., E.VII.R. (1556 Bandmstr., 12/Lrs.); Belgian Order of the Crown, Officer’s breast badge, silver-gilt and enamel; Egyptian Order of the Nile, Officer’s breast badge, silver, silver-gilt and enamel, mounted as worn, the first three with contact wear and edge bruising and the fourth with one or two bent arm points and restored obverse centre, otherwise good fine and better (5) £600-800 Footnote John Frederick Goodered left the 12th Lancers in 1926, having served as Bandmaster to the Regiment for 18 years. He subsequently became Director of Music to the Egyptian Army, was appointed a Bimbashi, and retired in 1937. Sold with several presentation pieces, comprising a silver match holder, hallmarks for Birmingham 1907, with maker’s mark ‘A. & J. Z.’, the front of the outer case inscribed, ‘J. F. Goodered’, and the back ‘R.M.S.M., 1908, for Merit’; a silver dance-card-holder, with accompanying mechanical pencil, hallmarks for Birmingham 1908, with maker’s mark ‘W. N.’, this inscribed on the front ‘From Will & Nell to Jack as a Token of Congratulation on His Appointment to the Leadership of the Band of the 12th Royal Lancers, March 1909’; a silver salver, hallmarks for London 1925 and maker’s mark ‘C. & Co.’, with central inscription around the regimental crest, ‘Presented to Mr. J. F. Goodered by the Officers XII Royal Lancers on his Leaving the Regiment after 18 Years Service as Bandmaster, 1926’, the reverse with the engraved signatures of 25 officers of the Regiment; and a silver cigarette box, hallmarks for Birmingham 1925, and maker’s mark ‘A. Bros.Ltd.’, the lid inscribed, ‘Presented to Bimbashi J. F. Goodered by the Members of the Cast of “Iolanthe”, Cairo, April 1927’. Also sold with a quantity of original documentation, including white-bound programme for the Cavalry and Yeomanry Memorial Service at St. Paul’s Cathedral in 1919, with related admission ticket; a watercolour study of the recipient “in action” in full dress uniform on a bandstand, signed T. Noyes-Lewis and dated at Margate, July 1925, with inscription, ‘In appreciation of a beautiful rendering of “The Prelude”’; the recipient’s Advanced Certificate of Qualification for the Appointment of Bandmaster, in the name of ‘Bimbashi John Frederick Goodered’, and dated 1 January 1930; letter of appointment to the the Belgian Order of the Crown, dated 15 March 1930, together with related Buckingham Palace “Permission to Wear” document, dated 31 March 1931, and High Commissioner, Cairo forwarding letter for the last; “Licence to Wear” document for the Egyptian Order of the Nile, dated 16 December 1937; Masonic membership certificate; and a quantity of related photographs (or photographic postcards), including portraits in uniform and a rather attractive study of British and Egyptian Officers of the Egyptian Army, taken on the occasion of the former’s retirement in January 1937.
