MEDIEVAL ENAMELLED BRONZE 'DESPENSER FAMILY' HERALDIC HORSE HARNESS PENDANT 14th century AD A cast lozenge harness pendant with pierced suspension lug above, gilt surface with red and black enamel design blazoned quarterly argent and gules fretty or with a bend sable over all. 8.12 grams, 36mm (1 1/4"). Very fine condition. Provenance Found Swaffham, Norfolk, UK; in 1999. Literature Cf. lozengiform pendants in Ashley, S. Medieval Armorial Horse Furniture in Norfolk, East Anglian Archaeology 101, Dereham, 2002, items 157, 160. Footnotes The arms are those of the Despenser family. Hugh le Despenser ('the younger') was the son of Hugh le Despenser, Earl of Winchester and his wife Isabella, the daughter of William, the 9th Earl of Warwick. Hugh became the royal chamberlain and was a favourite of King Edward II but fell out with Queen Isabella. He was caught up in the manoeuvring of Roger Mortimer, tried for corruption and eventually hanged, drawn and quartered.
