Meissen Porcelain Small Octagonal Plate from the 'Christie-Miller Service' Circa 1740, blue crossed swords mark and Pressnummer 22. The center finely painted in colors with a view of Count Widman's Palace, the foreground with three gentlemen conversing on the loggia below a columned building, with other figures before a quay, the middle distance with boating figures before a galleon, within a black line octagonal reserve, the gilt trellis-pattern well reserved with four quatrefoil purpur-Malerei vignette panels, two with harbor scenes with galleons, two with river landscapes, the border with four further vignettes, one with figures in a landscape, another with a harbor scene, two with river landscapes, one with a Schloss, within similar quatrefoil cartouches flanked by gilt ombrierte foliage scrolls, shells and scrolling panels of line ornament, gilt line rim. Diameter 6 3/4 inches . Provenance: Samuel R. Christie-Miller Collection. Sotheby's, London, 7 July 1970, part (1 of 2). The main view on this plate is derived from etchings by Melchior Küsel after Johann Wilhelm Baur The figures and columnar building in the foreground closely relate to those engraved in the Venetian view titled, Prospect desz Pallazz zu Muran dem Conte Widman zu Ständig, 26; while some of the architectural details appear to reference the Neapolitan view Prospect der Schiffen, und Etlicher Pallazzie zu Neapoli alli Fondamenti novi, 19. Both of these images can be found in the album, Verschiedene ansichte in Italien, Cärnthen und Friul first published by Melchior Küsel in 1679.
