Beschreibung:

MELANCHTHON, Philipp (1497-1560). Autograph letter signed ('Philippus Melanchthon') to the Mayor and Council of Saalfeld ('Den Erbaren Weisen fürnehmen Herrn Burgermeistern und Rath zu Salveld, meinen günstigen Herrn'), Wittenberg, 9 May 1542, in German on paper, 1½ pages, folio (327 x 218mm) , integral address panel (skilful restoration to margins). Melanchthon praises the Council's diligence in providing the Church with learned and sober persons, as in the case of the appointment of Magister Stephan, in which they have acted in a praiseworthy and Christian manner; 'Der ewige Gott wolle seine Gnad und Segen dazu geben'. He is pleased to receive the news that the Council have thought to appoint Sebastian Werner as school governor, in that they 'Euern eigen Bürgerkindern solchen guten Willen traget' (have such good will towards the children of your own town), and that they consider Sebastian capable, a man who has pledged to serve his country with all fidelity. Melanchthon declares his wish to serve his correspondents in whatever way he can ('Und wo ich E.W. dienen kann, bin ich solchs zu thun willig'), and ends with a blessing. The 'Magister Stephan' referred to is Stephan Reich; his appointment is as a Deacon. Published in Corpus Reformatorum , 10, nr 7125.
