Map of the United States and Contiguous British and Spanish Possessions Compiled from the latest & best Authorities by John Melish, Engraved by J. Vallance & H.S. Tanner. Entered...the 6th day of June 1816. Published by John Melish, Philadelphia. [Insets: map of the]West Indies; Statistical Table of the Several Countries Exhibited on the Map. , 36 x 58" , scale about 6o miles to the inch. In 40 panels, divided and laid on linen, marbled front and back, with silk tape binding. States and borders hand-colored. One of the most interesting features of this map is the uncertainty with which the northern border of the United States is depicted. Two borders are indicated, one by a dotted line extending form the Lake of the Woods to the Gulf of Georgia (Puget Sound), at about 49o 40' North, the other by a bi-colored line following the parallel to the Assiniboine River, along the Assiniboine, South Saskatchewan and Great Lakes Rivers back to the parallel, then west to Puget Sound. The border was not fixed at 49o until 1818. A large, and fine map. Graff 2744, Wheat Maps. Condition: Overall toning, with light waterstaining throughout, not affecting outline colors, though there is evidence of bleeding of the green binding tape along the margins of the map. Outline colors faded.
