The English biologist William Bateson read Mendel's recently rediscovered paper in May 1900 and immediately commissioned this translation. The paper "transformed Bateson's career. He reinterpreted experimental data already available in Mendelian terms... [and] proved that Mendelian behavior holds for animals as well as plants" (DSB), thus providing the stimulus for the rapid development of genetic research in the twentieth century. EXTREMELY RARE.
