MERCATOR, Gerard (1512-1594) and Jodocus HONDIUS (1563-1611). Atlas minor, ou briefve et vive description de tout le monde . Amsterdam: Hondius, 1614. Rare French edition of the Atlas Minor, in unusually well-preserved state as complete with all maps and preliminaries and in a sound contemporary binding . Appearing first in 1607, the Hondius-Mercator ‘smaller’ atlas was a Europe-wide success, with editions published both in Latin and in several vernaculars. The first map shows a fine double hemisphere world map, further maps include (besides Europe in detail), the Middle-East, Persia, India, Ceylon, Indonesia, China, Japan and 8 representations of parts of the Americas. Koeman II Me 191; see Phillips 426. Oblong quarto (219 x 175mm). French imprint mounted on the original Latin one. With engraved title and 146 maps in contemporary colouring (minute lacuna of 2mm to the upper edge of map on 3Y4, short close tear to upper margin of 2G4 just touching the outer frame of the map on recto, some fraying to the upper margin of a couple of quires, some marginal browning or soiling and occasional thumbing). Contemporary vellum over paste-boards, yapp edges, preserving ties. Provenance : some contemporary ink pen trials and inscription around the map on M4 – remains of a 19th-century red ink stamp to the margin of first preliminary leaf – C.L. Pithan (late 19th cent. exlibris) – remains of an erased 20th-century label on front paste-down.
