Amsterdam: Joducus Hondius, 1616. 5 parts in one volume, large 2 o (455 x 285 mm). Hand-colored engraved title, hand-colored engraved double-page portrait of Mercator and Hondius, 4 hand-colored engraved divisional titles, and 150 ENGRAVED DOUBLE-PAGE MAPS ALL COLORED BY A CONTEMPORARY HAND, all woodcut initials colored by a contemporary hand. (Some maps with strengthening of gutters and margins including maps of Germany [Yyyy], Hassia [Ppppp], Saxonia [Vvvvv], some with short tears repaired, Ooo "Aquitania" with 7in. portion of upper right corner torn away, India [Rrrrrrr] torn and repaired affecting image, a few maps with tiny holes, last 35 maps with tiny worm hole.) Contemporary pigskin over thick paste-board, rool tooled with a large lozenge design around a central medallion (some rubbing to sides, some minor worming, light wear to corners). Provenance : Bautzen, Johann August Jakubetz, (early ownership inscription on title "Bibliotheka Johannis Augustini Jakubetz canonici Budissinae"). THE MERCATOR-HONDIUS ATLAS WITH 150 ENGRAVED DOUBLE-PAGE MAPS, FINELY COLORED BY A CONTEMPORARY HAND. The Mercator-Hondius atlas is one of the most important atlases in the history of cartography. First published in 1595 by Mercator (see previous lot), and continued by Hondius, who purchased his plates in 1604. New maps were included in each edition, expanding the 107 maps of the first edition to 150 in the 1613/16 edition. The last digit of the 1616 date on the title page is supplied in manuscript.
