MERCATOR, GERARD and JODOCUS HONDIUS Atlas minor. Amsterdam: Jodocus Hondius for Jan Janszoon [ Colophon : Dordrecht: Adrianus Bottius 1610]. Oblong 4to, 176 x 225mm. (6 15/16 x 8 15/16 in.), publisher's gilt-blocked vellum, edges sprinkled red, worn, masking tape across spine, inner hinge broken, first 2 quires coming unsewn, engraved title slightly abraded and with marginal repair incurring slight loss to border, marginal worming to first 4 leaves, 2-inch tear to fol. F1 affecting 8 letters, two maps (Lithuania and Germania inferior) with tears just entering borders, about 14 leaves with marginal tears or repairs, light browning throughout, occasional minor marginal dampstaining . Engraved allegorical title, allegorical engraving, and 153 engraved maps with title cartouches, all with letterpress captions and pagination and text printed on versos, including Jodocus Hondius's twin-hemisphere world map and his planispheric map of the "Christian world" (Shirley 259 and 260), THE TITLE, ALLEGORICAL ENGRAVING AND MAPS FULLY COLORED IN A CONTEMPORARY HAND, THE TITLE HEIGHTENED IN GOLD, woodcut printer's device on verso of last leaf, Latin text, "Anglia "map printed upside down. Phillips 429; Koeman II, Me 189A: a variant, differing from Koeman's description as follows: without the inserted "Index Regionum" leaf; without the inserted map of Tierra del Fuego; Lotharingia and Lotharingia Meridional (Koeman's nos. 54 and 55) in inverted order, Lotharingia Meridional pasted down over another map; Koeman's maps 79 and 80 also in inverted order. Provenance : Early manuscript index on recto and verso of lower flyleaf; John Alfred Spranger, bookplate; bequeathed to the present owner, his daughter Elizabeth Graff.
