London: printed by T. Cotes for Michael Sparke and Samuel Cartwright, 1635 [1637]. 2° (286 x 183 mm). Engraved additional title, 182 maps by Hondius, R. Hall Peter van der Keere and J. van Loon (including Hall’s Map of Virginia and Smith’s Map of New England, and the duplicate map of New Spain). (Made up from two copies, with several leaves, including Ralph Hall's map of Virginia, trimmed smaller than the other leaves, a few rust or worm holes, one map shaved, the folding map of New England defective, F5 with 1/3 of the page renewed affecting text, a few headlines shaved.) Modern calf, gilt-lettered morocco spine label, edges gilt. Provenance : Boies Penrose (bookplate; his sale Sotheby's London, 7 June 1971, lot 164). FIRST ENGLISH EDITION, second issue with the engraved title dated 1637 and Ralph Hall's map of Virginia tipped in facing Hhhh2 and the duplicate map of New Spain on Hhhh3 recto. 141 of the maps are from Hondius's Atlas Minor, the remainder appear to have been engraved for the present work. “The buyer should be careful to secure a copy of the second issue with the rare map of Virginia… A change of owners took place two years after the first publication, and the frontispiece was re-engraved, having Sparke's name alone, with ‘Second Edytion’ added, and the date changed” (Sabin). With the rare map: Ralph HALL , Virginia . London, 1636. Based on John Smith's map of Virginia, embellished with an ethnographical view of Virginia. Alden & Landis 637/67; Burden 187 (state 9) and 244; Koeman Me 208; Phillips 451 & 4255; Sabin 47885 (incorrect map count); STC 17824.
