(16 11/16 x 11 3/8 in.), contemporary calf gilt, rebacked preserving original backstrip and original endpapers, covers heavily restored, modern folding cloth box, lacking general engraved title and 2 maps (America and Anglia regnum, Koeman nos. 78 and 90), the unsigned dedication leaf to Henrico Ranzovio and Rumold Mercator's "To the reader" leaf misbound before the Preface (fol. a1), engraved divisional title and dedication leaf to Queen Elizabeth [fols. e1-2] misbound between maps II and III, dampstaining and softening to text leaves and to text below world map, some marginal staining throughout, thin crease to world map, short fold breaks to 2 maps (Europe and Polar Region), rust hole to map XXIV (Prussia), a few small marginal tears or repairs . FIRST EDITION OF PART I OF MERCATOR'S ATLAS, published after Mercator's death by his son Rumold, engraved portrait of Mercator, engraved divisional title, 32 (of 34) double-page engraved maps, woodcut initials and head-piece ornaments, type ornament tail-pieces, title, portrait, maps and ornaments fully colored, the title heightened in gold, the world map by Rumold Mercator (Shirley 157) in Koeman's state III, Asia map signed at bottom, typesetting of the preliminary text and of descriptive text to maps corresponding generally to Koeman's edition A (maps VI, XIV-XV and XVII-XVIII with slightly variant typesettings not described by Koeman).
