MERCATOR, Gerard, Louvaine, 1541/1551] A fine pair of late 20th-Century 16.1/8-inch (41cm.) diameter reproduction globes, after the celebrated pair of Gerard Mercator, the terrestrial Edebat Gerardus Mercator Rupel mundanus cum priui legio Ces: Maiestatis ad an: sex Louanij an: 1541 [Gerard Mercator of Rupelmonde published it with privilege of His Imperial Majesty for six years, in Louvain in the year 1541], dedicated Illustriss: Dño Nicolao Perrenoto Domino à Gran uella Sac: Cæsa reê Ma t i à consi lijs primo dedicatõ [Dedicated to the very distinguished Lord Nicholas Perrenot, Lord of Granvelle, first counsellor of His Imperial Majesty], the equator with gilt decoration graduated in degrees, the ecliptic with gilt decoration graduated in days showing only the symbols for the houses of the Zodiac, the Tropics and Polar circles in red, the oceans with numerous wind roses and loxodromes, pictures of fishes and fantastical sea-creatures, and descriptive cartouches, a large pair of dividers pictured in the Pacific, the southern Atlantic Ocean with a large cartouche Europê ali quot insigniorum ciui tatum nomina, quê suis inferi locis angustia operis prohibuit [Here all names of European cities are recorded that could not be mentioned in full on the globe.
