MERCEDES-BENZ 500K CABRIOLET B Year 1936 Chassis No. 113693 Engine No. tba European taxes paid Engine: eight-cylinder in line with supercharger, 4982cc, 160bhp at 3400 rpm; Gearbox: four speed manual, rear-wheel drive; Suspension, front: independent with coil springs, rear: independent, swing axle and coil springs; Brakes: four wheel hydraulic drum; Left hand drive. Coachwork by Sindelfingen, 4 seater cabriolet, red with beige leather interior. Model History Following the vintage period, during which the companies Daimler and Benz were merged in 1926, the early 1930s brought more austere times, and the emphasis moved from sporting and competition cars to the manufacture of smaller cars. It was not until February 1934 that an all new luxury model, the 500K, was unveiled at the Berlin Motor Show. It was built until 1936 and this and the later 540K were the natural successors to the famous earlier supercharged models engineered by Ferdinand Porsche but with more refinement and comfort. The Cabriolet B as offered for sale, of which only 106 examples were built out of a total of 342 cars over a three-year period, would have cost a huge Reichs Mark 22,000 when new. It provided excellent performance from its supercharged eight cylinder power unit, and the standard well-proportioned open touring body demonstrated the capabilities of Mercedes-Benz' owned coachbuilding subsidiary, Sindelfingen. Specific History of this car The Mercedes-Benz Classic Center has been able to confirm that this car, order number 203163, was originally delivered in June 1936, having been supplied through the Düsseldorf Mercedes-Benz branch. Its first owner was a company based at neighboring Rheydt, and the car was then finished in light silver green metallic livery. Subsequent history is not known at the time of writing. However, it spent a number of years in America and was offered for sale at the Auto Toy Store in 1990, from which it was purchased by Hans Lüscher and returned to Europe. Condition The 500K was restored during the years 1998/9 for an amount of about £150,000 with the result that it presents very well indeed. The work was carried out by Schindler of Urdorf, a Mercedes-Benz specialist in Switzerland. Christie's has however not yet had the benefit of test-driving the car.
