MERCURY HEAT SHIELD – E. O. Extension Drawing . St. Louis: McDonnell Aircraft Corporation, 24-25 March 1961. Mercury heat shield blueprint signed by three Mercury astronauts and the Mercury spacecraft designer. SIGNED by Scott CARPENTER and Wally SCHIRRA. SIGNED and INSCRIBED by Gordon COOPER and Max FAGET. Dr. Max Faget (1921-2004) was co-designer of the Mercury spacecraft and was given a United States patent for the vehicle’s design. Illustrated is a ¼ scale view of a mounting ring and cables for the Mercury heat shield. The ring assisted attachment of an expandable landing bag to cushion the spacecraft during an ocean splashdown or possible unplanned hard surface landing. A side view drawing illustrates the exact location of the ring and heat shield. Blueprint, 22 by 34 inches. Stamped: "Reference Only, APR-5, 1961."
