MERIAN, Matthaeus (the Elder, 1593-1650). Novae regionum aliquot amaenissimarum delineationes [second series: ... Ex naturali locorum positu desumptae, et ] aeri incisae. Strassburg: Peter Aubry, 1624-1625. 2 series in one volume, small oblong 2° (187 x 298mm). Etched throughout, two titles and 40 plates (24 in first series and 16 in the second) by Matthaeus Merian. (Somewhat browned throughout, three plates with small marginal tears.) 20th-century vellum, titled in manuscript on spine. Provenance : Adolf Hitler (countersigned stamp). FIRST EDITIONS. The first series is of 24 landscapes in the vicinities of Basel, Stuttgart and Heidelberg, with a Latin (or Greek) proverb, one Latin and one German distich in the lower margin. The second series illustrates landscapes in the vicinity of Basel. The setting (in the first series) of proverbial scenes within actual landscapes is particularly charming. Hollstein, German Engravings, Etchings and Woodcuts 1400-1700 XXVI, 294-335 (second state, preceded by proof impressions).
