MEROVINGIAN FRANKISH GOLD AND GARNET SWORD SHEATH MOUNT Circa 5th-6th century AD. Decorated on the outer face with triangular gold cells and cloison garnets; two rivets to the end for attachment to the frame of the sheath, accretion from the iron blade remaining. Gold, iron and garnet, 21 grams, 88 mm. Very fine condition, complete and undamaged with all the original garnets in situ. Excessively rare. Provenance Ex Hiller collection, acquired in the 1950's. Footnotes A similar mount, with rather more complex cloisonné design, formed part of the burial furniture of King Childeric I at Tournai; Childeric was the founder of the Frankish Merovingian dynasty who died in circa 481 AD.
