MEROVINGIAN FRANKISH GOLD ZOOMORPHIC MOUNTS Circa 6th century AD. A pair of repoussé gold foil mounts in the form of stylized birds with discoid eye, hooked beak, D-shaped wing and ribbed detailing on the body and tail; the lip pierced in four places for attachment. Gold, 2.19 grams, 48.3 mm; 2.38 grams, 47.6 mm. Very fine condition. [2] Provenance UK art market, acquired prior to 1985. Literature See Carver, M. Sutton Hoo. A Seventh Century Princely Burial Ground and its Context. Footnotes These mounts are very similar in style to the small bird brooches used in Merovingian areas in the 6th century. Formed in gold foil, they were probably backed with pitch or leather and used to decorate the face of a shield, as on the famous examples from Sutton Hoo Mound 1.
