Half-title with engraved vignette, 64 engraved illustrations and 4 plates, 6 double-page, by Gaspar van Wittel and others. (Some light spotting and browning.) [ Bound with :] Sac. Congreg. Riparum Tyberis Romana Remunerationis pro illustriss. D. Cornelio Meyer Memoriale. Rome: Vatican press, 1685. 2°. Collation: A-D2 (8 leaves). (Lightly spotted). 2 works in one volume (405 x 270mm). Contemporary vellum (neatly repaired and recased). Provenance : ink armorial ownership stamp on additional title of first work. The first work comprises the first two sections as described in Olschki but lacks the later sections, notably the Nuovi ritrovamenti I & II of 1696 and 1698. Cornelis Meyer was a hydraulic engineer of great renown with a rich and inventive imagination, as these plates demonstrate. He employed some of the best engravers of the time, dealing with the problems of navigation along the River Tiber and illustrating a number of other projects by Meyer. There are a number of manuscript versions of Meyer's proposals for the Tiber. (see codex 1227 in the Bibliotheca Corsiniana with original illustrations attributed to van Wittell). First work: Cicognara 3792; Olschki 17589, cf. G.Briganti Gaspar van Wittel . Milan: 1996 pp.424-427.
