Typescript journal of Lieutenant Colonel Walter Leslie Hailes MC, 3 volumes in 2, 1914-40, 210, 203 and 101 numbered leaves, typed rectos only, photographic group portrait corner-mounted to an initial leaf in volume 1 (one faint crease), with facing typescript description, contemporary maroon cloth, spines lettered in gilt, slightly rubbed, 4to, together with Hailes (Walter Leslie), War Services of the 9th Jat Regiment, 1st edition, Aldershot: Gale & Polden, Ltd., 1938, 4 colour plates (1 with laid-in proof), 6 folding maps, frontispiece tape-repaired verso, printed presentation plate from the regiment to Hailes, signed by Major General C. F. G. Young, mounted to front pastedown, laid-in typed letter signed to Young on Buckingham Palace letterhead concerning the presentation of another copy to King George VI, plus Ross (John, & Walter Leslie Hailes), War Services of the 9th Jat Regiment, Volume II, 1937-1948, edited by N. St. J. Becher, 1st edition, 1965, colour frontispiece, 1 photographic plate, 6 maps, and Hailes (Walter Leslie, & John Ross , The Jat Regiment, A History of the Regiment, 1803-1947, 2 volumes in 1, 1st collected edition, published by Col. R. N. Banerji, Commandant, The Jat Regimental Centre, Bareilly, 1967, 12 plates including frontispiece, 13 maps, inscribed in pencil 'For Lieutenant Colonel Walter L. Hailes - Military Cross' on the front free endpaper, each work in original blue cloth, slightly rubbed, mottled or cockled, the 1st collected edition with the chipped dust jacket, 4to Unpublished journal of service by the official historian of the 9th Jat Regiment. Hailes was initially with the 6th Jat Light Infantry, who fought in the Mesopotamian Campaign and the Third Afghan War before their absorption into the newly-formed 9th Jats in 1922. The new regiment's notable engagements include the Waziristan campaign (1936-9) and World War Two service in the Western Desert Campaign, Burma and Malaya. The second volume of War Services of the 9th Jat Regiment was printed in a run of 100 copies only. Provenance: by direct descent from Hailes to the present owner. (5)
