MILTON, John (1608-1674). Paradise Lost. A Poem in Twelve Books . London: S. Simmons, 1674. 8°. Engraved portrait by W. Dolle, with the final blank (portrait mounted, top margin of O8 slightly defective and repaired affecting headline, a little staining and soiling). Early 18th-century sheep (rebacked, corners worn). Provenance : R.B., 1701 (his 'perlegit' at end) -- Sam. Barrow (early 19th-century signature on A2 v and a poem, possibly in his hand, on verso of final blank) -- From the Library of John Jackson (1793-1875) of Academy Place, Warrington (bookplate). Second edition, with the number of Books extended from ten to twelve by dividing Books VII & X into two each. According to Milton's nephew, Edward Phillips, these changes were made at Milton's direction and were, therefore, among the last literary labours undertaken by him. Wing M2144; Grolier 605.
