MILTON, John. Paradise lost. A Poem in Ten Books . London: Printed by S. Simmons, and to be sold by S. Thomson...H. Mortlack...M. Walker...and R. Boulter, 1668. 4 o (173 x 129 mm). (First two quires [A-a] restored along gutter folds, a few ruled borders shaved.) Contemporary speckled dark calf, ruled and decorated in blind (front hinge cracked); quarter morocco slipcase. Provenance : "CR" (early reader with a few marginal notations) -- purchased from Seven Gables Bookshop, New York. FIRST EDITION, title-page corresponding with Amory's issue no. 2 (the traditional 4th title). The seven preliminary leaves contain 'The Argument,' a defense of 'The Verse,' and the errata, but do not include 'The printer to the reader' on \K p \kA2r (suggesting the preliminaries were supplied from a later issue [see Grolier 604]).
